IU memulai debutnya pada 24 September 2008 dengan mini album pertama-nya "Lost ang Found" dengan hits andalannya "Missing Child". Namun, Album ini tidak begitu sukses. Kemudian pada tanggal 16 April 2009, IU meluncurkan Full album untuk pertama kalinya, berjudul "Growing Up", album ini sukses dengan memimpin pada urutan pertama pada SBS Inkigayo dengan hits andalannya berjudul "Boo." Pada album ini IU membawa beberapa nama artist terkenal lain seperti SG Wannabe dan Younha. Lagu ini juga berhasil di KBS Music Bank K-Bagan, di Mnet Countdown M! grafik, dan berbagai chart musik online.

Pada tahun 2009, IU menyanyikan judul lagu, "Araro" untuk drama MBC terkenal, Queen Seon Duk di mana ia direkomendasikan oleh music director drama. Dia juga ditampilkan pada album Mighty Mouth di lagu Love Class "희망 사항." Pada akhir tahun 2009, IU merekam lagu MC Mong "Love Letter For You (Neoyege Sseuneun Pyeonji)," menampilkan SHINee's Key sebagai rapper dalam lagu.

Solo Karir

Pada bulan Agustus 2009, IU menjadi tuan rumah untuk program baru Gom Music Chart pada GomTV, Yang merupakan sebuah acara mingguan di mana netizens Korea Selatan memberi suara untuk lagu favorit mereka pada grafik.

Untuk sementara waktu, IU menjadi tamu tetap pada Super Junior Kiss Radio, Maybee's Naikkan Volume, dan MBC Starry Night (host oleh Park Kyung-lim dan Shin Young) dan Chin Chin Radio (host oleh Taecyeon). Setelah keberangkatan Taeyon, ia terpilih sebagai seorang DJ sementara selama dua minggu bersama dengan anggota B2ST Doojoon.

In the segment she revealed that her father really influenced her a lot when she was younger, she shared that her father loved singing a lot and remembered that she always listened to music with her dad when she was young. They would even visit the karaoke often together which really gave an influence to her.

IU also mentioned another factor that made her decide to become a star by adding that when she was in her first year of junior high, one of her teachers suggested that she should perform at her school’s athletics’s competition. When she set foot on stage, she then realized that she truly wanted to be a singer and that’s when she started searching for auditions.
Viewers even praised her efforts at such a young age and expressed that she was really a well-rounded artist and not just a one-hit wonder.
